Grade 2

In Second grade, students study four core subjects in Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. Language Arts, both reading and writing, are taught through the Literacy By Design series from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Spelling is explored through the Zaner-Bloser Spelling Connection. Students are engaged through student driven projects, personal interests and a reading/writing workshop approach. Math is studied through Everyday Mathematics by McGraw Hill, and Science through Hartcourt HSP Science. Each of the textbooks is full of hands on activities so students experience what they are learning.
Core subject competencies are measured both in the Fall and Spring through the MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) standardized test. Competencies are also measured through DIBELS for reading comprehension, and Everyday Math cumulative exams. The exam data is used to drive teaching and learning. Our focus is to assure that each student meets the common core standards in English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies while becoming critical thinkers and achieving at higher levels.
Student learning is balanced in all areas as the children also enjoy electives and extracurricular activities. The Second graders enjoy Art, Physical education, Music, and Drama. Weekly computer lab and library visits enhance student learning. Furthermore, sports, music training, and various clubs are offered after school. Field trips add extra fun and exposure to the Korean culture and to make real life connections to the curriculum.
Our students learn in a warm expeditionary learning environment with frequent trips outside of the classroom. Without any doubt, learning is fun. Throughout YJIS, students and staff comprise a diverse learning community currently from many nations including Norway, U.S.A, The U.K, The Philippines, Malaysia, Israel, Nigeria, Puerto Rico and of course South Korea! We hope you join us and help grow our learning community!
