Online School – High School

Diploma Programme (DP)Philosophy and Aims
2014-15 will be the final year that YJIS will offer the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) to Grade 10 students, and the first year that we will include Grade 9 in our International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP). In 2015-16, when Grade 10 too becomes part of our MYP programme, YJIS will be an IB World School, proudly offering the three IB programmes from Preschool to Grade12.

This decision has been made because we believe the MYP best prepares student for the rigours of the Diploma Programme and provides them with the skills and approaches to learning that will enable them to continue to grow, learn and succeed beyond their years at BIFS. We recognize that the 21st knowledge and that of the past. Armed with the attributes and skills articulated in the IB learner profile and philosophy, we believe our students will be better equipped to meet those challenges as responsible members, if not leaders, of communities around the world.
These changes to Grade 9 and 10 will not affect our subject offerings. Students will still be required to participate in English language, mathematics, science and humanities and make further choices from, art & design, music, ICT, design & technology, Korean, Spanish. For 2014-15 Grade 10 students, the IGCSE Handbook, available in the Downloads section of the website will provide further detail.

The Personal Project (PP), to be introduced at Grade 10 in 2015-16, is a learning tool where students use a variety of research, time-management and presentational skills to create a project that is the culmination of their MYP years. In Grade 9 students start to think about what they would like to present and how it might best be presented. The PP Coordinator and subject teachers will mentor students through the process. The PP is an opportunity to showcase student skills, understandings and passion. It demonstrates, like the Exhibition in Year 5 of the PYP and the extended essay in Year 2 of the DP, their understanding of the interconnectedness of knowledge.
Since 2008, we have offered Grade 11 and 12 students the opportunity to study in the world-renowned IB Diploma programme. Accepted by major universities world-wide, it is a highly rigorous course that requires not only considerable academic aptitude, but also includes a CAS(Creativity, Action, Service) component, a course in the Theory of Knowledge and a student generated extended essay. Not all of their school life will be focused on the academic. We encourage students to become involved in co-curricular activities and events. There are a number to choose from including a wide range of musical options such as choir, orchestra, piano, violin, saxophone, clarinet, guitar, drum, cello, trumpet and flute tuition. In June, students take part in Action Week. We offer students the choice of overseas adventure or service camps, excursions within Korea or a range of school-based activities including photography, ceramics, video production and many more. As a small school, YJIS takes the time to look after and develop the individual student while providing them with the necessary personal, social and academic skills to carry them along their path of life-long learning.
